Health Insurance Requirement

All Cornell students are required to have adequate health insurance. Each year you will be automatically enrolled in Cornell's Student Health Plan (SHP), unless you waive your enrollment for an alternate insurance plan, or are eligible for Cornell's Student Health Plan-Medicaid (SHP-M).

Tips & Topics

  • Consider enrolling in an optional dental and/or vision plan

All students are eligible to enroll in Cornell's dental and vision plans, regardless of what other health insurance you have. Learn more about the benefits of these optional plans, and how to enroll.

  • Financial aid and health-related costs

If you apply for and receive financial aid from Cornell, your award will be based upon the estimated cost of attendance, which includes $358 toward "health-related costs." The estimated cost of attendance includes the $179/semester student health fee, or—if you enroll in SHP—$358 toward the SHP premium. Note that if you enroll in SHP-M and receive financial aid,  your award will be revised to remove the $358 aid, as SHP-M has $0 charge. Please consult the Financial Aid Information for Newly Admitted Students for more information.
